Trivia

  • In the 32-Bit era, this was cast as the earliest lore in the Mortal Kombat universe. It takes place slightly earlier than Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero.
  • Sonya Blade, Jax’s female Special Forces partner was originally planned to be in the game, but was cut.
  • According to Ed Boon, the series’ co-creator, the game went through a development hell. This included John Tobias, the other co-creator, and several other team members leaving Midway. The game’s development was rushed to completion after the incidents.
  • The very first stage is one giant love letter to fellow military game Metal Gear Solid.  Warehouse, trucks, forklifts, boiler area, and even the bathroom.
  • Several stages pay homage to other Mortal Kombat fighting game stages. The sewers look similar to the Dead Pool stage in Mortal Kombat II. The very last stage is one giant Pit stage, where you can send enemies over the edge with the uppercut combo.
  • Several assets are references to Mortal Kombat 4.
  • In the final cinematic, Jax holds the gem up and says he knows exactly what to do with it. In a 4th wall break, it ends up opening up Cheat Mode in the game.
