Variants

Thanks to the folks at redump.org, it looks like Oddworld got itself some code revisions. After the original publication up top, the black label got a “Revision 1” to its code base. It’s not clear what the programming changes are. However, the easiest way to tell is that the file creation date will be 1997-10-30. If you don’t have a disc drive handy, there’s a second, but not quite durable, way to possibly confirm.

The discs are printed with the same image, but the way the silkscreen is applied is slightly different. At first glance, they appear the same to the naked eye. If you place the discs side by side so that the lower right patch of purple is next to each other, it will be easier to tell. Tilting the two discs, the original up top will look more silver and muted. The ‘Rev 1’ disc will look more purple and saturated. It will be super subtle, but once your eyes see it, you can’t unsee it.

Don’t rely on the site scans, they’re much closer than that.

Revision 1 Re-release – File creation date of 1997-10-30

The game was then released in the good old Greatest Hits collection with the same Revision 1 code. This version, thanks to the all-clear coating of the disc, is easy to spot. Look at the ring around the hub where you see the backwards text, and there should be a single 3, 4, or 6 around the ring. Earlier numbers might work as well, but these were the three confirmed by redump.org.

Greatest Hits Code Revision 1

The game was then re-released with a Revision 2. This code update is easy to spot for two reasons. First, if you toss the disc into a system, you’ll see the new movie promo for Abe’s Exoddus that they added. Otherwise, once again, looking at the text within the hub ring will reveal the variant.

This one comes in two flavors: bright green GH bar and darker green GH bar.
