Intro

Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi has had an exciting life over the last 30 years (as of the creation of this guide). And by exciting, I mean it could be either loved or hated based on where you’re reading. The punching bag of various social media jokes, including being on several “worst games of all time” lists, there is a flip side to people reminiscing about it. Usually, the sentence, “I just remember not being able to do any special moves,” is part of the conversation.

When I began playing the game to review it, I could see where both sides were coming from. There’s plenty of fan service in roster and locales, with some amazing 10-Hit combos (or ‘branches’ as they’re called in the game) to be had if you can remember the button sequence.

But something was lurking beneath the surface, something I couldn’t quite put my finger on. At least until I discovered LucaArts’ own move list was buried on their site from decades ago. Sadly, whatever encoding they used to create the PlayStation button imagery was lost to time. In the weeks that followed, carefully reconstructing the source material made me appreciate the depth that the game was trying to convey. In that time, I realized that maybe even LucasArts wasn’t sure what they were trying to say.

The game features an impressive number of moves, with most characters having two sets divided by unarmed and weapon-equipped stances. Stack on a Force Power Bar that can upgrade moves, and it can be daunting, to say the least. I wanted to try and simplify that, and after a small revelation, I believe I found the path forward.

Make no mistake, Teras Kasi still has flaws that it can’t hide, but between those faults hides a good time to have with a fellow Jedi.

What’s Changed:

  • The original LucasArts version was saved in a Microsoft Word .doc, whose implementation of PlayStation Button symbols was broken, with no ability to recover it. I have replaced all the garbage text with words (i.e., Square, Circle, etc.) so that the same fate cannot be cast on this rebuild.
  • The said list appears to have also been used by Prima Games to write their official guide. I have used it in tandem with the .doc file to cross-reference combos and sort out mistakes caused by the glitching, specifically in button timings.
  • LucasArts’ original document used shorthand in various locations, which came across as confusing, particularly in the combo sections. I have expanded all of these into their individual components for easier reading and flow.
  • Originally, moves were sorted by stance, weapon mode, and then starting button prompts. Due to the Force Bar implementations, those sections could be unberably dense and confusing. To give readers some breathing room, I pulled Force Moves into their own section, treating them like Street Fighter’s Super Arts.
  • Basic Moves with and without weapons have now been separated from more complex button presses. The moves are sorted from easiest to hardest to allow players a path forward in learning the moves.

Basics

This is not a player-friendly game, but I wanted to make it as player-friendly as possible. SW: MOTK has way too many moves for any mere mortal to remember. You have unarmed, armed, and force-infused moves. Switching between armed and unarmed can lock out the other’s moves from happening. It’s enough to drive an Ewok crazy.

I have broken down the move lists into the following sections:

  • Basics (With and Without Weapons)
  • Multi-Button
  • 1 Direction + 1 Button
  • 2 Directions + Buttons
  • Advanced Moves
  • Force Powers
  • Branch Combos.

Every section is more advanced than the previous, and within each sub-category, they are arranged from easiest to hardest.

The trick to surviving is to pull 1 to 2 moves from each of the non-Basic categories and practice till you find a selection that fits your style. Once you have those down, you need only really memorize one of the Branch combos to round out your arsenal. Imagine it like a cross between Mortal Kombat X and Street Fighter III; you create your own style (rather than MKX’s pre-made three) and then find a Force and Branch Combo that works (like Street Fighter III’s choice of Super Arts).

You will need to get used to Teras Kasi’s timings. Some moves that have (PAUSE) in them mean you need to wait a nanosecond before you move to the next press. All Branch Combos require the first two button presses – which are usually opposite each other – to be pressed quicker than the rest of the sequence. Turn hope into practice and learn these crucial differences to enjoy the game.

Lastly, so as not to strain your eyes on reading moves, the Directional Pad inputs have been abbreviated to the following:

Assumes you’re Player 1 facing to the right. Flip if you’re on Player 2’s side.

  • Up = U
  • Right = F (Forward)
  • Down Right = DF or FD (Down Forward or Forward Down, based on movement)
  • Down = D
  • Down Left = DB or BD (Down Back or Back Down, based on movement)
  • Left = B (Backward)

 

 

Modes

 

  • Arcade Mode
    The main course of the game disc. 1 player will go through 8 characters, and then Darth Vader himself. Choosing the correct options and finishing it with specific characters will unlock hidden fighters. See the game’s page under Secrets for more info.
  • Vs. Mode
    Two humans have at it.
  • Survival Mode
    Choose a character and survive on a single health bar as you rise through the ranks. Each win nets you back 25% in health. Another character is hidden here. See the game’s page under Secrets for more info.
  • Team Mode
    1 or 2 Players each choose 4 characters for a squad-based brawl. Each character gets one shot, and if they lose the round, the next team member is brought in. A button sequence opens up the way to unlock a hidden character.  See the game’s page under Secrets for more info.
  • Practice Mode
    Beat up a helpless opponent till the wamprats come home. Note that if you are in Weapon mode and knock the opponent out of the ring, you’ll be reset with your weapon stored.
  • Records
    Where you can compare charts and tallies. Tracks Vs. Results, Character Popularity, Vs Stats, and Survival Records. Oddly enough, they tease the hidden characters in the Vs. table.
  • Options
    Here, players can adjust game conditions, such as the number of rounds to win and the time within each round. Note that certain settings will affect whether you can unlock the extra characters and modes. See the game’s page under Secrets for more info.

 

 

 

 

Arden Lyn

Note: Arden Lyn always has her weapon equipped.

Arden is likely a great starting point for people to learn the ropes of the game. Since she has only one mode, there’s no need to memorize non-weapon moves. Her Flip Kick Cartwheel makes for a great lead into a prone attack.

Boba Fett

Everyone’s favorite bounty hunter is the Swiss Army Knife character of the game. He has an M.Bison-like torpedo assault, a Scorpion-like spear, Sektor-like missiles and flame thrower, and even a Ryu-like move in there. The tether line causes the opponent to stumble backwards if it connects, making it a great chance to ring them out. Use the torpedo move as your starting point to flesh out your roster.

Chewbacca

Everyone’s favorite wookie is really slow and really tall. He makes a great defensive character if you can spam his crossbow shots. His branch combos are slow, but brutal, and can stagger the opponent. A good mid-tier character to break in.

Han Solo

Han is hilariously overpowered in Force moves, more than his actual Jedi friends and foes. Han is the Ken/Ryu of the game, with flashy uppercut moves and even flashier branch combos. His branch combo switches him from unarmed to armed, which is a great way to catch opponents off guard.

Hoar

One of the hardest characters to learn. That said, his Branch Combo and Whirling Dervish Advanced move do a fantastic amount of damage. He’s best used in a hit-and-run style, and then once you have the opening, go crazy with the branch combos.

Note: Thok’s weapon is always equipped

Thok is the odd man out, and not just because he’s the second ‘bad guy’ tied to his weapon. With a smaller move list, he should be an easy study, but too many of his moves look the same. He can be hard to read because you don’t know if the correct move came out, unless it’s obvious, like the glowing force moves.  His growth attack can be a fun sideshow to the main course. He’s the one you play if you have something to prove.

Darth Vader

Darth Vader’s move list is a combination of Luke, Leia, and Mara Jade’s all wrapped into one. While he has a significantly shorter move list than other characters, his damage ratio more than makes up for it. Unless you need to heal or cast lightning bolts, work with his lightsaber always out.
