Trivia

  • Using a GameShark Pro’s Memory Editor, various names from NBA Jam’s past can be found, perhaps leftover and depreciated hidden characters from prior games.
  • Retains the arcade’s buy-in process. ‘Free Play’ appears at the top of the screen and the game announces you’ve ‘paid’ for a full 4-period game.

Secrets

Midway’s NBA Hangtime is packed with tons of codes and hidden characters.

Programmer’s Cheats

With these codes, the tumbler will flash if inputted correctly. These codes also lock you out of the tumbler once activated.

  • American Basketball Association Ball Colors
Hold Right and quickly press Cross, Square, Circle. This also triggers ‘No Tournament’ mode.
  • Big Head Mode (for the player who inputted it)
Hold Up and press Circle, Square.
  • Dennis Rodman’s Hair Color
Highlight the Chicago Bulls and Dennis Rodman will be part of the first choice. Press Circle and you can cycle through 8 colors to change to.
  • No Computer Assistance
Hold Right on the D-Pad and quickly press Circle, Circle.
  • No Player Arrow
Quickly press Left, Left, Circle, Square. This turns off your locator arrow when you’re off-screen.
  • Random Team Select
Hold Square and Press Up. The game will auto-scroll and choose a team for you. You’re allowed to choose the squad.
  • Rooftop Court
Hold Left and quickly press Square, Square, Square.
Versus Codes

For these codes, you’ll enter them in at the Match-Up screen with the tumbler at the bottom of the screen. Press Turbo for the first number, Shoot for the second number and Pass for the final number. So if the code is 1-2-3, you’ll press Turbo once, Shoot twice, and then Pass three times. You’ll know the code works via a text prompt in the lower left corner for Player 1 once the game starts.

Game Modifiers

  • Baby Sized Players:  0-2-5 (This is confirmed mid-screen)
  • Fast Passing: 1-2-0
  • Goal Tending: 9-3-7
  • Hyper Speed – Fast Pass + Turbo: 5-5-2
  • Max Power: 8-0-2
  • Max Speed: 2-8-4
  • No Pushing: 3-9-0
  • Quick Hands: 7-0-9
  • Stealth Turbo – Your shoes don’t change color when Turbo is used: 2-7-3
  • Tournament Mode – No Codes Allowed: 1-1-1 (Announcer yells, “No!”)
  • Unlimited Turbo: 4-6-1
Hidden Characters

At the Player Input screen, you’ll have 6 letters and a 4-digit PIN to enter to save your character. If the character name all in caps is shorter than 6 letters, choose ‘End’ to move to the digit entry.
