Mar. 25th New Releases: 3D Pursuit on the Frontier

Greetings PlayStation lovers! Today’s not too bad of a day for the new releases section at EB World. First, let’s get the retro fans taken care of. If you ever owned an Atari 2600, Pitfall was almost always a staple of the system. One of Activision’s best-selling titles, the game eventually saw sequels on the Nintendo Entertainment system, and then follow-ups on the Super Nintendo and Genesis. With the PlayStation release, Pitfall 3D breaks free of its 2D origins and goes full 3D. After monkeying around the first area or two, the game looks like it’ll be a solid pick-up. It’s not perfect, but it’s got the fun angle to it.

For our Role Playing Game folks, Sony and Square Soft provide you with Saga Frontier. I got a chance to play the Import version for a bit, but unlike Final Fantasy VII where I could fumble my way through the game (3 times) without knowing Japanese, I got lost fast. Pretty happy to finally have a version I can understand. Play multiple characters in their own storylines in a fancy 2D world.

Finally, let’s talk racing. I’m an arcade racer; give me Mario Kart, Ridge Racer, all those games where “Press Gas to Win” is all you need in life. The first two Need for Speed games on PlayStation while nice, just didn’t fit my needs. Hot Pursuit, on the other hand, sweet baby Jesus take the wheel. Between the gorgeous ideas used for the tracks, to the handling, to the really nice visual tricks sprinkled throughout the levels, NFSIII is a total delight to play, and one of those games you’ll go back to during the years to come. Now, if only we could get some sort of Mario Kart game for Crash Bandicoot, I’d be set. *SIGH*

This Anniversary News Update celebrates the Game’s original release date 20 years later. This is part of a series treating the PlayStation as if it launched September 9th, 2015.
