You know, I still remember the Die Hard Game Fan magazine article, showing off a bizarre, but simple demo of a 3D Final Fantasy game that everyone took to be an N64 title. After all, Square had only ever released the Final Fantasy series on Nintendo platforms. But when it was announced that Final Fantasy VII was coming exclusively to PlayStation, no less published by Sony themselves…well…let’s just say all hell broke loose.
It was a moment in gaming history where you finally saw the first true divide begin to tear across the landscape. Where the hardcore loyal fans of Nintendo followed and defended their cart based methods, while the freshman era PlayStation fans supported the CD audio and storage capacity. To this day I can still hear the debates ringing in my head – it’s an era of rivalry that will most likely never be seen again.
Regardless of your stance on the release or the game itself, here’s to history. Just watch out for Ruby and Emerald.
